Monster Hunter Freedom 2 Overview
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is an action oriented RPG where the player takes on the role of a bounty hunter. The hunter can choose from a list of missions which all vary in difficulty. There are exceptions but most missions involve the player hunting down and capturing a single monster. These fights can range from twenty minutes to fifty minutes and prove to be challenging for even the most seasoned gamers. Where this game really shines is its multiplayer aspects. You can join your fellow hunters on missions and help that defeat their foes that they could normally not beat by themselves. Overall the game is really fun but it is also very difficult so more seasoned gamers are more likely to enjoy this gem.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 Review
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is a wondrous second to Monster Hunter Freedom. Before you begin the game, you can import your previous character from Freedom into Freedom 2. Depending on the amount of money you have, it will become part of Freedom 2‘s currency. Your looks, name, and tickets will also transfer over. This is a huge boost to your character’s start, and money is a huge deal in Monster Hunter. Continuing from the first one, you are brought to Pokke because they requested you there from Kokoto village. On your way you are chased by a Tigrex and fall from the mountain side, ending up in the village, where the villagers take care of you until you are ready to become their Hunter. |
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 features new weapon types and new monsters which also means new armor sets. Weapons that you may be unfamiliar with are the Long Sword, Gunlance, Bow, and the Hunting Horn. The Long Sword has an ability that is related to a Dual Blades Demonization. Every attack that hits a target increases the Spirit Gauge, which when full will increase your sharpness, and using the Spirit Blade attack will knock even a mighty Tigrex down and scrambling. The Long Sword is also lightweight, making it extremely maneuverable. |
The Gunlance is a lance and a bowgun mixed into one with a few differences. Like the Lance, the Gunlance can block and use similar attacks and guarding. Like the Bowgun, it can fire off shells, but the number of shells depends on the Gunlance’s Shelling level (level two for two shells or level three for three shells). The shells add extra damage along with a new strategy that you won’t be able to use with the Lance. Unlike the Bowgun and Lance, the Gunlance can use an ability called Wyvern Fire. Wyvern Fire is a destructive blast that takes time to use, but because of its destructive power, Wyvern Fire takes time to cool down. The down side to the Gunlance is that using its shelling and Wyvern Fire abilities will take your sharpness down faster than just attacking. |
The Bow is similar to a Bowgun, in that it is a Gunner weapon and that it has Coatings which are the Bow’s “shot.” The Bow has a line that shows up when you hold down the R button for easy-to-see range and to see where the arrow will end up. The bow is different from the Light Bowgun and Heavy Bowgun because it has levels of charge, which differ by what is released. The different variations of arrows you can have are Rapid, Pierce, and Scatter. Rapid fires quickly for escaping monsters, Pierce fires an armor-piercing arrow that can go through even the toughest armored wyvern with ease like the Gravios, and Scatter splits the arrow into many, making it easier to put a status ailment onto a wyvern. These different arrow types change depending on which level they are. If you had a Scatter level two, five arrows will be fired instead of three if it was level one. Levels of power are important to the Bow’s success. If you had the first charge Scatter level two, second charge Pierce level three, and the third charge Rapid level one, in order to use the second and third charge you will have to hold the triangle button until you hear or see a flash (one flash for the second charge and two for the third). The only drawback to the Bow is that charging up the Bow to use the other charge levels takes stamina, which does regenerate fast, but if you are out of steak and unable to find something to eat, your stamina will decrease until you can’t use the third charge level. |
The Hunting Horn is an awkward weapon to use at first, but if you become good with it and like to have melodies come from a huge weapon, then go and make one. I haven’t had very good experiences with the Hunting Horn, but it is a really great support weapon and can bash the enemies with an attack similar to the Hammer. What is so unique about the Hunting Horn is that it has an ability called Recital, and through the different tunes made you can gain buffs like increased recovery rating or movement speed. In order to use Recital, the R button has to be held down. While the R button is down, press the triangle, square, or circle button to change your stance and a note will be played. Depending on the Hunting Horn, a different two colored notes will be played and different buffs will be given. The Hunting Horn is a heavy weapon, so movement is limited. |
Similar to Freedom, Freedom 2 starts you off with bone weapons of every type and the basic quests or one star that begin with the gathering and a couple of hunting quests. The guild quests are also the same except for the new monster quests. The Training School contains both single and group trainings that will give you coins to create rare pieces of armor and weapons that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to create. The beginners training is useful to anyone new to Freedom 2 because of the new weapons and their uses. Training School quests can also be downloaded for both single and group training. The farm is different in a few ways. In Freedom 2, the farm has bee hives, where you can collect honey for Mega Potions or anything that may require honey. There is a Popo, a new monster similar to the Aptonoths, that you can collect dung from for your plants. There is a trick to collecting the dung, though. Last but not least, is the cave. The cave contains a humongous sword that will be unlocked later in the game and can be mined using elder dragon bones. |
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 was a great experience and better than Freedom, and it presents many more monsters to kill, skin, and wear. I give Monster Hunter Freedom 2 a 90.Final Grade: 90% |
