Atlantica Online Overview

Atlantica Online is a turn based massively multiplayer online role playing game that was released for the PC in 2008. Since it’s release it has received numerous awards and was even the game chosen for the Korean game world championships two years in a row. With a unique tactics style gameplay this game is very different compared to your typical MMORPG. Set in the real world with fantasy and mythological aspects this game also allows players to own their own house similar to games such as Ultima Online and Asheron’s Call. Although the gameplay is unique and pretty well done it’s appeal is most likely limited to fans of tactics style gameplay.

Atlantica Online Review

Atlantica Online is one of the best free MMORPGs you will ever come across. You are a dreaming human. In this dream, you see three sisters. They teach you many things that will help you begin on your journey to find Atlantis.

At the end of the dream, you will be able to choose the destination of where you want to begin. You will end up in the Forest of Spirits of the area you chose. The one I chose was Sapporo. Every area is in Northeast Asia.

During the dream, you will be able to fight for the first time. You will see that Atlantica isn’t a normal MMORPG. The combat is all turn-based. It is a little different from most, though, because it has a timer. Both you and the enemy have a certain amount of time, depending on the number of allies you or the enemy has. The max turn time is thirty seconds. This time may seem short, but once you get used to your mercenaries and their abilities, you can easily finish turns within ten seconds.

The first turn is always yours, from what I have seen. I don’t specifically know who will go on the first turn before battle, but I have noticed that it’s pretty much always the swordsman. You can sometimes have more than one person go at the first turn, but at max I have gotten only three. The enemy’s first turn is the same, as well, but most of the time it will only be one of them attacking.

Mercenaries come in different ranks. At the beginning, you will only be able to hire D rank mercenaries like the swordsman, spearman, archer, gunner, and shaman. The swordsman is the only mercenary that has stats that specialize in defense and vitality, making him a must for the front line. His beginning skill is flame sword. It does lots of damage and does magic damage. He can only wear swords and shields.

The spearman is also a melee-only mercenary, like the swordsman, but isn’t defense oriented. He has a high attack and has a high chance to do combos. He can only use spears. He begins with the lightning spear skill. This is a great ability, because the spearman can attack two people in a column.

The archer is a great mercenary because she can attack anyone from any distance. Maybe I shouldn’t say distance. More like any column. She doesn’t hit that hard, but she can really combo with her bow. She begins with the silence spell. This is one of the most useful skills any party can have, because if you are hit by any magic attack it can really turn the tide for the enemy.

The gunner is like an improved archer because she can attack an entire column, but doesn’t do the damage to really make a humongous difference. She is most definitely a must in any beginning party because of her wild shot. It can do about triple her normal damage with only one hit, though.

The shaman is also a must the second you get to level ten. Once you are level ten, you will be able to get one more mercenary, and I suggest getting a shaman. The shaman is the only mercenary that can heal at the beginning, and it’s an instant cast, unlike potions, which take one turn before actual use. Blessing of life is truly a blessing because it can heal a large amount of health. Everyone tends to have a lot of health for a turn-based game.

As for you, the main character, you can choose from any weapon during creation. You get the same skills as any other mercenary with the weapon. There are also some skills that only you can get. For me, at first I tried the gunner and I didn’t like it very well. I am now a musician because he seemed like a good class to choose. I would have chosen the power saw, but you need a main character that’s at least level one hundred.

The combat isn’t the only thing that is unique to Atlantica. You will be able to begin crafting once you get to your second doctor NPC, at least for me. You will be able to craft ten healing potions. It costs ten ginseng and five dogwood fruit. Ten health potions is a lot for the little number of materials needed. You can look and see what you can craft through skills in the My Info tab. You can craft anything. It won’t go into your inventory right away, though. You first must get the work load needed for the item. To gain the workload, you just need to fight once you begin the crafting.

One of the most unique and my favorite thing aboutAtlantica is its encyclopedia. In game, you can click on the Game Info tab to see anything you want to know about Atlantica in terms of monsters, towns, mercenaries, etc. You can look up everything else in their FAQ in the Help button near the mini map.

During battle, when you kill an enemy you have a chance to gain info on them. In order for a higher chance, it seems that you can just mass your party one monster. The first will allow you to do 110 percent more damage to that certain monster, while they do 90 percent. The second will allow you to see all of their information in the encyclopedia, instead of the basic information. The third lets you gain better and more rewards from that monster. So, in other words, Atlantica gives you a great reason to do some grinding.

To gain experience points, it’s not like a normal turn-based game. Every skill or attack that successfully hits will get you some EXP. If you kill an enemy, you will gain a lot more. You will also gain experience for the whole party by doing quests. It seems that the ones in the front lines gain more EXP, but that may be because they are my melee units.

In towns, there are many things to do, most of which are buying or selling of items. Towns are the best place to buy materials if you don’t have any. You can buy anything in the marketplace. Marketplaces can be like the auction. There is a set price for everything, if you are buying. Of course, you can buy the items that cost less that players put up. The hospital is where you can buy medicine items, heal and revive mercenaries, and you can even sell anything you don’t want.

There is also a barter shop that allows you to trade for items. The bank allows you to deposit and withdraw gold. Gold is very plentiful in this game. The sparring hall lets you practice combat according to the free league rules. The free league is a type of Player Versus Player. You can also store things in the warehouse.

Atlantica Online is a great MMORPG that anyone can love instantly. It is also free and offers so much more than most free MMORPGs. I haven’t really gotten into anything involving guilds, but they can be really expansive with their own towns and dungeons. I give Atlantica Online a 95.
